The Museums and Exhibitions Group is delighted to present our bursary schemes.
The first is the Collaboration Award which is primarily intended to foster collaboration, especially between museum professionals and university-level teachers and researchers (FEC or HEI affiliated or independent).
Secondly, Individual Awards are being offered to provide financial assistance for museum professionals to undertake original research towards a publication, exhibition or display.
Applicants to each scheme can apply for any amount between £200 and £5000. This award is tenable for a maximum of 12 months and can only be used for one project. There are two application periods per year for both awards.

The latest recipients of the AAH Museums Bursary are ‘Research and Reveal’: A collaborative project between the University of Bristol and Amgueddfa Cymru. A full report on their project appears online here.
Last year, the Association of Art Historians (AAH) awarded £10,000 to five museum projects. In the first round of applications three collaborative projects were funded. The first, between Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery and the University of Plymouth was for an exhibition titled ‘Into the Light’ which will open in Exeter later this year. The second project was again a collaboration, this time between Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery and the University of East Anglia. They will use the funding to produce an interactive electronic learning resource for the painting galleries at Norwich Castle Museum. The third sum funded collaboration between Central Saint Martins College of Art and the Museo di Sant’Agostino, Genoa, Italy, leading to the production of a produced a 16mm film about the radical, modernist exhibition designs of Italian post-war architect Franco Albini and his collaboration with museum director Caterina Marcenaro in the early 1950s. Reports on the Italian and Exeter collaborations appeared in Bulletin 107.
Last November the AAH funded Mark Bills to x-ray and research one of the Watts Gallerys’ major paintings ‘The Irish Famine’ in order to reveal another painting underneath. In addition funding was given towards a joint project between Manchester Museum, the Whitworth Art Gallery and the Edinburgh College of Art, University of Huddersfield and Manchester Metropolitan University. The aim of the project is to select artefacts from the Palaeontology and Minerology departments at Manchester Museum to be scanned and printed as 3D objects in polymer resin. These will be included in an exhibition ‘Shadow/Sonic’ which will open at the Whitworth Art Gallery in September 2011.
